The Dos and Don'ts of Septic

DO

  • Inspect and Pump Frequently

    • Every 3-5 Years for Conventional Systems

    • Yearly for Alternative (Treatment) Systems. (Required by VDH)

  • Be Conscious of Water Usage

    • We recommend high efficiency faucets and toilet fixtures.

  • Scrape Food Waste into the Trash, NOT the Sink

  • Keep Plants, Trees, Gardens, etc. More Than 10 Feet Away from the Drainfield to prevent root intrusion.

  • Direct Downspouts and any Sump Pump Water Away from the Drainfield. Excess Water can Saturate the Field and Compromise the Treatment Process.

DONT

  • Pour Grease, Bleach, or Ammonia Down the Drain

  • Build Structures over the Drainfield or Tanks

  • Park/Drive on the Drainfield

  • Ignore Unusual Odors or Slow Drains

  • Allow Livestock to Graze on top of the Drainfield

  • Dispose of Mediciations in the Toilet or Sink
